Le Gardeur bridge Rehabilitation of Le Gardeur bridge in the Repentigny and Montréal municipalities
The project consisted in preparing plans and specifications to reconstruct bridge deck and repair piers and abutments. The existing bridge deck was showing signs of weakness and important degradation which required rapid preparation of plans and specifications to be capable to reconstruct bridge deck as quickly as possible to ensure user safety. The deck of the structure, made up of concrete covered steal beams, was replaced by a new wider deck resting on steal beams and making it possible to have four standard lanes and a sidewalk/bicycle path. Abutment reinforcement was done to respect present seismic criteria. Unique aspects An important aspect to take into account during the design phase of the bridge deck design was to very precisely survey actual pier positions and their respective elevations, in order to perfectly adapt the new deck to the conditions on site. Another important point was traffic management. To this effect, construction was done in two phases and with a very tight schedule to minimise the impact on the users. Preliminary engineering as well as detailed design were done to obtain a cost efficient solution while respecting strict design and sustainability criteria imposed by Quebec’s Transportation Department.
