Expansion of Montreal's Palais des Congrès
Montreal’s convention centre is built on the street pattern formed by Viger North, Bleury East, Saint. Antoine South and Saint. Urbain West. This vast 120 000 sq. meters facility, 55 meters high, provides services to exhibitors, developers and merchants, allowing the City of Montreal to maintain a dominant position in the very competitive market of convention organizations.
The expansion project involved the construction of a 650 place underground parking structure, the rehabilitation of Montreal Transit Authority's building, the integration of Rogers & King heritage building façade and fire station number 20, the construction of loading dock capable of receiving 18 tractor-trailers, the construction of a structure over the existing freeway located between St. Urbain and Bleury Streets and the construction of conference and exhibition areas over 50 000 sq. meters.
The site presented certain constraints due to the location of the subway on the North side, heritage buildings on the South side, and the Ville-Marie expressway which passes through. On account of these characteristics, an long-ranged structure made of pre-cast concrete and steel was required.
